About Asher Ticktin

GEDCOM Note

Oscher Tiktin (36, married) and his son Mordechai (16) from Kalvarija, Russia, arrived into the port of New York on December 14, 1911, on the President Lincoln, originating in Hamburg. Their wife and mother was listed as Bela Tiktin, still living in Kalvarija. Oscher's occupation is listed as dealer. They were going to stay with their brother and uncle Wolf Kossin at 109 E. 75th Street. (In fact, the correct address was 75 E. 109th St). The following notations are marked over their names on the passenger manifest - NY 60310, YL671/463, 2-867, 537-505-3-26-41. No C/A. Per the 1930 U.S. census for Detroit, District 20, Enumeration District 216, Precinct 24, Ward 8, Block 136, taken on April 11, Asher Ticktin (54), Bella (51), Toba R. (22), Rachel (20), Phillip (18), with cousin Jack M. Matusevich (26) were living at 1713 W. Philadelphia Ave. They were all born in Lithuania. Asher was married at 29, Bella at 26. Asher immigrated in 1912. Bella with Rachel and Phillip in 1927, Toba in 1928, and Jack in 1929. Asher was a plumber, Toba and Rachel were Hebrew school teachers. Jack was not yet employed. I went over the Asher Ticktin chapter and there are a few things that don't make sense. Unfortunately, the people who would know the answers, my mother and aunt, are all gone now. Asher Ticktin, my grandfather, died in Detroit, Michigan about 1939. I do not think the Mordichai Ticktin, listed as going to America with him, was his son, unless Asher was married previously. This Mordichai, kind of disappears after they get to America and my mother never mentioned him. Asher was listed as having another child born in 1917 but he and my grandmother Bela had been separated by the First World War and had not been together until she immigrated with the rest of the family in 1927. There was another child who died young 5 or 6 years old as the result of an accident in Kalvarija. He may have been born in 1911. (email Gloria Zeitak 3/27/2005)
