About August Fabel

Possible 1st name Friedrich (with middle name August), but I have found no document supporting this. -Jackie Wayne Roberts.

Per his US Passport Application dated June 24, 1905, August stated that he immigrated to the US departing from Liverpool on 10 September 1854. The ship name was left blank.

August Fabel was born in Merxheim, Germany om April 8, 1832, the son of Johann Daniel and Maria Elizabeth Kratzman Fabel. August came to Louisville, Ky from the Rheinland Pfalz region of Germany in 1860 via ship sailing from Liverpool, England on September 10, 1854 or arriving in the US on that day. On a future US passport application he is listed with a height of 5 ft 5 inches, with a hazel eyes.

"August Fabel (1832-1909) born in Merxheim, Germany Theresa Good (?-1885).He was brother to Johannette Fabel Buchhold and uncle to {her son} Rudolph. August was in the leather business with Conrad & Fabel Leather Company with offices in Louisville and Cincinnati. August had immigrated to the US before Rudolph Adolph Buchhold, and when Rudolph came to America, August gave him a position with the the leather company. Later, Rudolph's brothers, Carl and Adolph, also worked there."-- "Following Love's Journey: A Narrative of Harry Kerrick Yann and Augusta Katrinka (Catherine) Buchhold" by Mary Jane (Yann) Stapp, June 1998.

August Fabel was co-owner of a tannery in Shepherdsville, KY with Theophilus Conrad (b. 6 Aug 1832 in Alsace-Lorraine to Martin & Caroline Conrad with residence on 2nd Street and then at 1402 St. James Court, Louisville, Ky). In 1860 Conrad & Fabel built a new tannery on Twelfth Street in Louisville and in 1871 consolidated with the Falls City Tannery, owned by James Edmund Mooney. The new firm, called Conrad, Fabel and Mooney operated two tanneries. Conrad later acquired a tannery in Cincinnati called the American Oak Leather Company, and eventually withdrew from the company to run the Falls City Tannery alone. -- from Theophilus Conrad Home (Rose Anna Hughes Presbyterian Home) Photographs Historical and Descriptive Data, Historic American Buildings Survey, National Architectural and Engineering Record, National Park Service, Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. 20243. The tannery on Twelfth St. in Louisville eventually became American Oak Leather Company before closing (probably in the early 1940s) James E. Mooney was President of American Oak Leather Company with August Fabel serving as Vice President.-- added by Jackie Wayne Roberts, Jr.

Obituary
AUGUST FABEL
August Fabel, first vice-president and treasurer of the American Oak Leather Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, died at his home in that city on Sunday May 2, of a complication of diseases. He was 75 years old.
Mr Fabel came to Louisville, Ky., in 1860 as a practical currier and tanner. After working at his trade for a while he became connected with T. Conrad, securing a small tannery in Louisville, which was run under the name of Conrad & Fabel. The product of these capable men was then considered the finest sole leather in this country. The business was finally consolidated in 1871 with that of the Falls City Tannery, owned by James E. Mooney, and the firm became Conrad, Fabel & Mooney. This continued until 1880, when Mr. Fabel and Mr. Mooney formed the American Oak Leather Company and built a tannery at Cincinnati, Ohio, retaining and improving at the same time the old tannery of Conrad & Fable, at Louisville. Mr. Fabel was at Cincinnati for the past twenty-eight years, taking a prominent part in the management of the business there.

"August Fabel was born in Mannheim (edit:actually Merxheim, according to his tombstone. Merxheim was at the time part of Hesse-Homburg, later Germany), Germany April 8, 1832. It is not recorded when he came to the United States. He was a tanner by trade and worked first in Indianola, Texas. In 1868 he was married to Theresa Wilhelmina Good in Louisville Ky. They lived three first two years in Indianola and there the first child, Helen was born. In June 1872 he purchased a home on the South side of West Broadway in Louisville within a block of where the Union R. R. Station now stands. He established a tannery, the American Oak Leather Company, on Twelfth Street near Kentucky Street. Later the tannery was moved to Cincinnati built where the Union R. R. Station now stands (edit: actually Cincinnati’s Union Terminal Which is next to where American Oak Leather Company stood), The corporation was dissolved about 1935.

There were three children. Helen, Irma, and Frederick. Theresa contracted tuberculosis and she and the children were sent to Paris, France, where she could be under the care of her brother, Dr. Richard Good, a practicing physician there. Incidentally, Dr. Good graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1861 and was a surgeon in the Federal Army during the Civil War. Theresa died in Paris Jan. 22, 1885.

After her death Mr. Fabel established the family home at 2519 Grandin Road, on a high bluff overlooking the Ohio River. There he died May 2, 1909. Both Theresa and he are buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville"
--From a family genealogical book “Irma" handwritten on cover (Genealogical material compiled by the descendants of August and Theresa Wilhelmina Good Fabel), added by Jackie Wayne Roberts Jr.

"August and Theresa Wilhelmina Fabel lived in Indianola, Texas for about two years after their marriage, and there the first child Helen was born Jan. 13, 1871.

The family lived in Louisville, Kentucky for a few years before establishing a permanent home in Cincinnati. At the age of fourteen years Helen's mother died and she assumed responsibility of the home for her father and younger sister and brother. She attended Miss Lupton's School and at the age of 18 took and passed the Harvard Entrance examinations in Chemistry and Latin, but by her domestic responsibilities was denied the then rare opportunity to pursue her course in higher education." --From a family genealogical book “Irma" handwritten on cover (Genealogical material compiled by the descendants of August and Theresa Wilhelmina Good Fabel), added by Jackie Wayne Roberts Jr.

On 18 September 1876, August Fabel & family (Theresa, Helen, Irma & Fred) are listed as passengers on the SS Pennsylvania sailing from Liverpool, England to Philadelphia, PA. Their last legal residence is listed as US as is where they intend to reside, so this must have just been a holiday/vacation/leisure trip (i.e. not immigration). https://www.immigrantships.net/v16/1800v16/pennsylvania18760918.html -- Jackie "Wayne" Roberts
