Helen Augusta Fabel Jones

"August and Theresa Wilhelmina Fabel lived in Indianola, Texas for about two years after their marriage, and there the first child Helen was born Jan. 13, 1871.

The family lived in Louisville, Kentucky for a few years before establishing a permanent home in Cincinnati. At the age of fourteen years Helen's mother died and she assumed responsibility of the home for her father and younger sister and brother. She attended Miss Lupton's School and at the age of 18 took and passed the Harvard Entrance examinations in Chemistry and Latin, but by her domestic responsibilities was denied the then rare opportunity to persue her course in higher education. She spoke German and French fluently (as well as English).

She married in 1898 -- five children were born to them. The care of her father's home until his death in 1909 and of her growing family did not diminish her concern with people, with continuing education, nor her religious responsibilities. She kept up with the education of her children and late in life studied Spanish and Greek because August had learned them. She knew the pleasure of luxurious living and the tight pinch of financial depression with equal equanimity and grace. Few parents have passed to their children more memorable and treasured heritage.
