About Benjamin Franklin Spalding
Son of Benjamin Aaron and Matilda Hager Spalding, was born in Ralls County, Missouri on 2/16/1839. He learned the furniture and cabinet-making trade under his brother and emigrated to Texas with his brother John H. before the Civil War. He served the Confederacy as a private in Parsons Brigade, 12th Texas Cavalry and was in engagements in Louisiana and Arkansas. After the war he engaged in making wagons under Mr. N. G. Wise at Waxahachie and later succeeded his brother John H. in the furniture and undertaking business at the same place. The business was operated for many years under the firm name of Spalding and Manuel, the partner being Henry L. Manuel of Paris, MO. He retired from active business in 1892 and thereafter engaged in looking after his farming and other interests, having accumulated considerable property. He was married to Mary E. (Mittie) Parks, daughter of Captain W. W. and Sophia Koonce Parks, at Cambridge, Clay County, Texas on 8/21/1882. She was born at Waxahachie, TX on 8/21/1959. He died in Waxahachie on 4/4/1908. Two sons were born: Douglas Gray b. 9/11/1883 d. 2/17/1888 and John Franklin b. 10/27/1885 d 10/16/1918. Mittie died 3/7/1933.
RESOLUTIONS OF (Missing type)
To the Commander and members of Camp Winnie Davis:
Your committee to whom was assigned the duty of drafting resolutions expressive of the death of our late comrade, Ben F. Spalding, respectfully submit the following:
Comrade Ben F. Spalding was born in Ralls County, Mo., Feb. 16, 1839, and died at his home in Waxahachie, April 5, 1908. Comrade Spalding came to Texas in 1859 and to Waxahachie in 1860; enlisted in the Fourth Texas Regiment Cavalry, 1861, and in October of the same year was mustered into the confederate service as a member of the Twelfth Texas Cavalry and continued a member of this regiment until the end of the war, when he was honorably discharged. Comrade Spalding took part in nearly all the battles and campaigns in which his command participated and filled the full measure of a good soldier. Comrade Spalding was a quiet, dignified, Christian gentleman, liberal in his views and sincere in his attachments.
Therefore, be it resolved, That we, his remaining comrades, extend to the family and friends of our deceased comrade our heartfelt sympathy in this their hour of bereavement and trust that our heavenly Father will soothe their anguish with the blessed hope of an immortality beyond the grave. That a copy of these proceedings be furnished the family of the deceased.
