About Bishop Jacob Mast, Sr.

Biography

Jacob immigrated to Philadelphia on the "Brotherhood", departing from Rotterdam and arriving in the port of Philadelphia on Nov. 3, 1750. He was about 12 years old at that time. Jacob travelled with his younger brother John and 4 sisters, supervised by their uncle Johannes Mast. The Mast children had been orphaned at an early age, and I can only imagine that their Uncle hoped they could start a new and better life in America.

Jacob's future wife, Magdalena Holly, was also on this ship with her parents Johannes & Veronica Holly! Magdalena was about 11 years old uponn her arrival in America. I wonder if the youngsters had any idea of their future together on that November day?!

Upon arrival in Philadelphia, the group travelled up the Schuylkill River to the foot of the Blue Mountains in northern Berks County, Northkill settlement, PA. Times were troubled for the Amish immigrants, and Indian attacks increased with the French and Indian War; Jacob Morgan, a captain in the provincial army encouraged the Amish Mennonites of Northkill to relocate to southern Berks County for safety. So, in 1760, the Amish Mennonites moved from Northkill to the Conestoga Valley, settling on the present day Marvin Stoltzfus farm west of Elverson, PA. Jacob Mast, age 22, was in this group - along with his new bride, Magdalena Holly; his brother; four sisters; and father-in-law, Johannes Holly! This family moved to the very southern corner of Berks County on the headwaters of the Conestoga River, settling there to begin a new life and new family.

Jacob was well liked, and, between 1788 and 1808, Jacob served as the Bishop of the Conestoga Amish Mennonite congregation.
