About Capt. Edward Valentine Garber, CSA

Co.A,52nd Va.Inf.Regt. KIA,2nd Manassas.

Fell, in the battle of Manassas on the 29th of August last, in the 27th year of his age, Captain Edward V. Garber, of company A, 52 Virginia Regiment, while leading his company in a charge against the enemy. Thus were the noble aspirations of a patriot spirit untimely quenched. Captain Garber, at the outset of the present struggle, was a resident of Missouri; but no sooner did the voice of Virginia reach him declaring her resistance to the unlawful purposes of our then Federal rulers, than it found instant response in his sympathies, and he hastened to his native county--Augusta--and there enrolled himself in the ranks of the defenders of the South. He was elected 1st Lieutenant by his company, and succeeded afterwards to its Captaincy. In all the relations of life he uniformly bore himself with rare and undeviating faultlessness. He approved himself to his comrades brave, generous, self-sacrificing. He encountered all the vicissitudes of the trying service in which he was engaged with unwavering fortitude. He discharged all the duties of his office with signal ability and fidelity; he met all its difficulties with unshaken equanimity. In his fall he presented an heroic example for the benefit of his country and the imitation of his associates. Sorely do those who knew him lament their loss. Dear will his memory ever be to his companions in arms; honored for aye the patriotic name he bore; and prized as priceless should that Independence be, for the maintenance of which such lives as his are laid down. .
