Francis Logan Family of Ruthreford County, NC

Francis Logan arrived in Rutherford County following the Revolutionary War. He was first listed in the land records of Rutherford County when he witnessed a deed in January 1784. He had five sons who left a large number of descendants in Rutherford County. They were Moses, Andrew, James, John (Jack), and Francis (Frank) Jr.

Francis Logan was born in Albany, New York in 1734. He was the son of Andrew Hendrick "Henry" Logan and Alida Pryun. Francis is believed to have moved with his parents from Albany, to Pennsylvania, to western Virginia, to the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina, and then to Abbeville, South Carolina. He married Hannah Trimble and was living in Abbeville during the Revolutionary War. As a Patriot during the Revolutionary War he served as a Captain in the fortified camp at Niney-Six, South Carolina in 1775, and attained the rank of Major by the war's end.

Following the Revolutionary War, Francis Logan relocated to Rutherford County, North Carolina on Second Broad River where he lived until his death in 1826. The area where he settled is now known as the community of Logan, or Logan's Store Township, and is located about five miles northeast of the town of Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Francis and his wife Hannah were buried in a family cemetery off Hudlow Road near where they lived. Francis and his descendants are frequently mentioned in the Rutherford County land records on Second Broad River, Catheys Creek, Camp Creek, and Cane Creek.

A number of Francis Logan's descendants distinguished themselves in public service. His sons Andrew, John, and Moses served as Justices of the Peace in Rutherford County. Moses' son Albert G. Logan served as a Rutherford County justice of the peace, and represented the county in the state general assembly. John's son George W. Logan served in various county and state roles including county clerk, representative to the state general assembly, and judge of superior court. George W. Logan's son Robert W. Logan served as Rutherford County clerk of superior court, Rutherfordton mayor, and a United States Commissioner.

Francis Logan and all five of his sons were listed as owners of slaves in the early censuses of Rutherford County. The African Americans that emerged from Rutherford County following the Civil War with the surname of Logan were most likely associated with this family.

Books about this family include The Genealogy of Major Francis Logan by Katherine Logan Conley (1970) and Logan: A Directory of the Descendants of Andrew and Lydia Logan of Albany, New York and Abbeville, South Carolina by Richard K. Logan (1994). Clarence W. Griffin included a short biographical sketch of Francis Logan in his book History of Old Tryon and Rutherford Counties, North Carolina, 1730-1936 (1937).

"A return of the militia and volunteers on duty in the fortified camp at Ninety-Six, the 17th day of November, 1775, under command of Major Andrew Williamson, by order of the Honorable Provincial Congress; commanding officers, sergeants and privates- - - Captain Francis Logan, two officers, three sergeants, fifteen privates."

Francis Logan emigrated to Virginia from New York, then to Berkley County, South Carolina.

"Major Francis Logan, a Revolutionary War Veteran of Old Ninety Six. The Tories were observed to be headed toward's Hannah's home to harm Major Francis. He hid under a nearby bridge. Hannah invited the Tories into the house to search for Major Francis & became upset when they began tossing her belongings around and creating a mess. Hannah quietly slipped outside, cut the reins to the Tories horses & set a pack of hounds chasing them. The Tories stopped their destruction of Hannah's home 7 left in pursuit of their horses. After Independence was declared, Francis Logan located in Rutherford County on the 2nd Broad River, where he lived until his death in 1826.
