Gershom Woodworth was Captain in the French and Indian Wars. He was Lt. in the Revolutionary war. He served in Capt. Van Woerts Reg. Albany Co. Militia (listed as being from Cambridge, Washington Co., NY). He was present at the massacre of Fort William Henry and served as sentinel on the alarm list for relief of the fort. NY Militia on Oct 19, 1787. He lost an eye and an arm in the Revolutionary war.
The oldest deed of land, of which anything can be learned, was given by the commissioners of forfeiture of the state, to Gershom Woodworth in 1786. It conveys the farm first occupied by Truman Christie, and afterwards owned by H. H. Woodworth. It was on this farm that the first log house was built, as well as the first orchard planted, both of which were done by Christie. As this farm was located on one of the old Indian trails, it is reasonable to suppose that it was the first settled land in the family.
He evidently went to Tyringham, Berkshire Co., Mass. shortly after his marriage as his children are recorded there. Gershom was a member of the Kingsboro Presbyterian Church, Gloversville, Fulton Co., NY in 1804.
