About Capt. Jesse B. Greer

DAR Ancestor #: A048047

"Jesse Greer was born about 1757, probably in Virginia before his parents moved to Wilkes County, N. C. Growing up on the frontier of western North Carolina during pre-revolutionary days must have been an exciting place for a young lad in his teens. The land and the forests were unspoiled for the most part except for an occasional Indian village. But the massive migration of settlers from Virginia began to change things. Roads had to be cut, forests had to be cleared for cultivation, and dwellings had to be built. It was a rugged existence, at best, but fulfilling to many who were unable to inherit or acquire tracts of land along the seaboard tract. On August 14, 1779, Jesse married Judith Hampton. It is not known who her parents were, although there were several Hamptons listed in the census that was taken of Wilkes County during 1784-87. Jesse was a captain in the militia during 1781-83, for which services he was granted bounty land as a resident of Washington - Sullivan Counties, Tennessee, on June 12, 1783. It is possible that he was the same person as the Jesse Greer from Wilkes County who fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain." (Information from Frank Greer, as per Tiffaney Porter, 1997.)
