About Capt. John Marshall, of the Forest

John Marshall was the son of Thomas Marshall and wife Martha Jane Sherwood. He was born c.1700 in Westmoreland County, Virginia and died in April or May, 1752. John left a detailed will, transcribed below, naming his children.

He married Elizabeth Markham January 5, 1722 in Virginia, daughter of John Markham. She was born c.1702 in Alexandria, Virginia, and died 1778 in Culpeper County, Virginia.

John Marshall was known as "of the Forest" to distinguish him from other John Marshalls on tax rolls in the area. Some claim that John had a plantation named "The Forest," but this is not so. His holdings were actually a poor piece of bottom land. He was a tobacco farmer. Some sources call his farm "Curls Neck," but this is an error. Curls Neck was a Randolph property in Henrico County.

John rose to the rank of Captain while serving in the militia during the Indian Wars. His son Thomas rose to the rank of Colonel during the American Revolution. His grandson John became the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
