John, son of Governor Thomas Welles, came to America with his father in 1636, landed at Saybrook, came thence to Hartford in ihe autumn of 1636, and to Stratford in 1645 (says the History of the Welles family), where he resided until his death.

He was made freeman at Hartford April I, 1645. He was elected representative from Stratford in 1656, 1657, and 1659. In 1658, he was elected Magistrate of Stratford, and Judge of Probate, according 10 the following: "March, 1658. This Court doth appoynt Mr. Ward, Mr. Hill, with the Townsmen of Fairfield, to assist Mr. John Welles in procuring wills and taking in Inventories, and distributing Estates of persons that died intestate, and to appoint administrators, and in case any are unsatisfied with their determinations herein they have liberty to take their address to ye next session of this court. This order respects Stratford, Fairfield, and Norwalk." (Hart. Rec, Vol. II, 102.)

John Welles married in Stratford, Elizabeth Bourne, a young woman who came to New England with Arthur Bostwick.

His will was dated Oct. 19, 50. and he died soon after, as he was deceased when his father died, the next January. In his will he says: "I give to my beloved wife, Elizabeth Welles, all that which is due to her in England • . . . . and .£40, to carry with her if she please to goe to England." He also gave his son Robert to his father to be educated, and although the grandfather died a little more than two months alter, Robert went to Wethersfield and lived and died there, receiving a considerable portion of his grandfather's estate.

The widow Elizabeth Welles married 2d, John Wilcoxson, in 1663, in Stratford.
