About Capt. John Woodward, Sr., of Newton

Biography
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/184665804/john-woodward
John was the son of George and Mary Woodward of Watertown, Mass., and born there 20 March 1648/9.
He m. (1) c. 1673 Rebecca ROBBINS, b. c. 1653, d. Newton 8 Jan 1695/6 (VR), the daughter of Richard and Rebecca Robbins. An article on the Bancroft family in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register (94:218) says John m. (2) 7 July 1686 Sarah Bancroft, and the couple had four children from 1687 to 1696, but this is in direct contradiction to the Newton vital records, which clearly show John having children with his first wife until 1695, followed by her death in 1695/6.
Find-a-grave contributor kaycie.jackson (49254154) has kindly provided the correction: his second wife was actually Sarah Prentice, married 16 Mar 1698/99 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, record found in Torrey's 'New England Marriages Prior to 1700.'

Disambiguation
As noted, he is frequently confused with John Woodward of Reading. This often causes wives and children which belong to the other john Woodward to be attached John Woodward of Newton.
Incorrect wife: Sarah Bancroft - The marriage of John Woodward and Sarah Bancroft was recorded on 7 July 1686 at Reading, Massachusetts. [5] This cannot be John Woodward of Newton, as one the location is entirely wrong and we know with certainty that he was still married to Rebecca Robbins who did not die until 1696. However, an article in the NEHGR did call him (incorrectly) John Woodward, son of George and Mary Woodward. [6] [7] Incorrect wife: Margaret Lemon - This is the second wife of John Woodward of Reading (not of John Woodward of Newton). Their marriage was recorded at Reading on 29 January 1699/00. [8] Incorrect wife: Sarah Goodenow - In 1855, Henry Bond stated in his Genealogies of Watertown that John Woodward married first Rebecca Robbins and second Sarah Goodenow. [9] Bond clearly made a mess of this family and is the original source for confusing John Woodward of Reading with John Woodward of Newton. There is no evidence in the records to support the marriage of either John Woodward to any Sarah Goodenow. She was clearly Sarah Prentice, and the records of the Prentice family clearly show there were no wives after her.
