Biography

George was a son of Richard Woodward and his wife Rose. He was born in England in about 1619. (In April 1634, the passenger list for the ship Elizabeth gave his age as 13, and on 6 April 1669 he deposed in court in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, stating that he was 50 years old.)[1]

Richard Woodward, age 45, a miller, came to Watertown on the Ship Elizabeth in 1634 with Mrs. Rose Woodward, age 50, and George Woodward and John Woodward, both age 13, per 'Planters...' by Banks. George's wife was apparently the Elizabeth, child of Widow Elizabeth Hammond, who arrived with her in 1633 on the Ship Griffin. George was admitted a freeman 6 May 1646.

According to the 'History of Watertown,' George Woodward (son of Richard, I): 'was adm. freeman, May 6, 1646. By his first wife, MARY, he had 8 chil. He m. (2d), Aug 17, 1659, ELIZABETH HAMMOND, dr. of Thomas Hammond, of Newton. [Hammond, 60.] Her father, in his Will, proved Nov. 5, 1675, gave her 100 acres on Muddy River (Brookline); probably the same land upon which her son George afterwards settled.

Death

George Woodward died May 31, 1676 in Watertown. He was buried in the Old Burying Ground, in Watertown.[2] Administration of his estate was granted June 20, 1676, to widow Elizabeth, and son Amos. Inventory, June 23, 1676, 143. 10. One source says that Elizabeth then married Samuel Truesdale; however, the death of Elizabeth Woodward, at age 66, was recorded in Watertown on 24 August 1700[3], implying birth in 1633-34, which calls that second marriage into question.
