Joshua Brainerd (Daniel) of East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut; married, first, Mary Olmstead, born about 1688, baptized 7 August 1692, in Hartford, Connecticut, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Lord) Olmsted, of East Haddam. Mrs. Mary (Olmsted) Brainerd died 25 December, 1704, in that place. He married, second, 12 July 1710, Mehitable Dudley, born ----- 1682, in Saybrook, Connecticut, daughter of William and Mary (Roe) Dudley, of the same place. He was town committee, and one of a committee to build a church with his brother Daniel, and one of a committee to repair the meeting house, to attend to the seating of it, and to finish the Turret, according to the Tenure of the vote, between 1 December 1704, and 12 November 1705. He was commander of the first military company formed in East Haddam, and retained the command until it was divided by order of the Governor, into two companies. He was to lead the soldiers to a choice of officers, and it is said that he did so, commencing with prayer, and making an address founded upon the passage of Scripture, "With my staff I passed over this Jordan (that is, Connecticut river), and now I am become two bands." He was a farmer and lived a little east of where Selden Brainerd lived (1896). The place of his residence is marked by an old cellar mound, just south of the house. The second burying ground in East Haddam was laid out in the north part of Hadlyme parish by Joshua Brainerd and Isaac Spencer, town committee, near or joining Joseph Dunning's house lot, in the west side of said lot, near the upper end. Millington was settled about 1704 at which time Joshua Brainerd moved there. Sergeant Joshua was appointed Ensign in May 1706. Mrs. Mehitable joined the church, 23 February 1717, or '18, as the wife of Ensign Joshua Brainerd. He was town assessor in 1697. Captain Joshua Brainerd died 13 May 1755, in his 83d year. In The New London Gazette of 12 February 1773, is found the following: "On the 23th. ult., at East Haddam, Mrs. Mehitable Brainerd, widow of Capt. Joshua Brainerd in the 87th year of her age, very suddenly, taken with a severe pain in her head which went all over her body, when the pain left her, in which condition she remained about an hour when she expired. Her death is thus recorded by Judah Cone, who married her granddaughter. "In Feb. 1773, died Mehitable Brainerd, grand-mother, in the 84th year of her age." - The Genealogy of the Brainerd-Brainard Family in America, 1649-1908, Vol. I. (Joshua), pp. 41-42.
