Notes for Elijah Brainerd:

--------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elijah Brainerd * (Daniel) of Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut; married, 28 September 1699, Mary Bushnell, born 10 March 1675, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Leffingwell) Bushnell of Norwich, Connecticut. He was a farmer in Haddam, Candlewood Hill district. Mrs. Mary (Bushnell) Brainerd died 11 September 1735, æ. 60 years. He married, second, 6 September 1738, Margaret -----. Mr. Elijah Brainerd died 20 April 1740, æ. about 62 years. Mrs. Margaret (-----) Brainerd died -----.

  • Rev. David Dudley Field in the Brainerd Genealogy, published in 1857, said that Elijah Brainerd had two children by his second marriage. I (Lucy Abigail Brainard) have found no mention of them in his will, nor anywhere else. Thomas Canfield married, 26 November 1740, Margaret Brainerd. Mr. Thomas Canfield died 4 December 1760. Margaret (Brainerd) Canfield died 15 March 1757. I do not know whether she was the widow of Elijah Brainerd or not. He married, first, 3 January 1705/6, Mary Camp. His residence was Durham, Connecticut. I do not know who Margaret Brainerd was, if not the widow of Elijah Brainerd.

The Genealogy of the Brainerd-Brainard Family in America, 1649-1908, Vol. II (Elijah), p. 41, The American Genealogist, Vol. 27, p. 99 (1951).

NOTE: According to "Families of Early Milford, Connecticut", p. 192, Margaret Brainerd married, 26 November 1740, Thomas Canfield, son of Thomas and Mary (Camp) Canfield, born 6 August 1720; i.e., the son of the Thomas that Lucy Abigail Brainard thought he had married. Durham Vital Records (Barbour, Vol. 9), does not identify any children of the marriage of Thomas Canfield and Margaret Brainard. This does not bring us appreciably closer to establishing Margaret's identity, but does imply, to some degree, that she may have been as much as (40) years younger than Elijah Brainerd. - WDC, 24 April 2005.
