James Brainard was appointed Ensign, then Lieutenant and Captain of the Home Militia, by the Assembly. He was also appoinited one of a committee for surveying and laying out of land, with his brothers Daniel and Joshua Brainerd.

He was chosen deacon of the Congregational Church and was a farmer.
