WILLIAM MONTGOMERY was a member of a prominent Scottish family of that name from Northern Ireland. He was born in 1723 in Ireland, a son of Capt. James Montgomery and Anne Thomson, of Ireland, late of Augusta County, Virginia, and grandson of Capt. Hugh and Jane Montgomery (of Ireland). He was a nephew of Catherine Montgomery Stuart Calhoun, wife of James Patrick Calhoun. Catherine was born near Convoy House in County Donegal, Ireland and was said by her family to be closely related to Genl. Richard Montgomery of Quebec fame (as per the letters of Hon. John Caldwell Calhoun, SC statesman). Genl. Richard was born at Convoy House in County Donegal and descended from the Montgomery family of Hessilhead, Scotland. The Hessilhead Montgomerys were a cadet branch of the ancient Scottish House of Eglinton of Ayrshire. William Montgomery married Margaret Briherly (Huegenot) in Augusta County, Virginia. On August 1, 1771 William bought 135 acres of land near Buffalo Lick and Fort Chiswell on Reed Creek in Wythe County from his brother for L100, and sold it on June 31, 1779 to James McCorkle for L1000. While living there he was appointed Constable on Reed Creek for a time. William also owned a 12 acre tract, of land on which he and Margaret lived for a time, in Montgomery County. He served in a company of Virginia Militia during the French and Indian War for which service he recieved 50 acres of land in 1780. William and Margaret Montgomery, along with George and Nancy Bell, were the first actual settlers in Clarksville, Tennessee County, North Carolina. Clarksville was founded by William and Margaret's son, Lieut. Colonel John Montgomery, a Revolutionary war hero from Southwest Virginia who served under Genl. George Rogers Clark in the Illinois country. Tennessee County, North Carolina would later become Montgomery County, Tennessee named in honor of Lieut. Col. John Montgomery. William and Margaret's children were: Lieut. Col. John Montgomery, who married Phoebe Ramsey; Margaret E. Montgomery, who married Alexander Neeley; Katherine, who married Col. Isaac Bledsoe, and became a Revolutionary war heroine; Mary Montgomery, who married Hugh Ferguson Bell; and Nancy Montgomery. William died in 1785 in Clarksville, Tennessee County, North Carolina (later Montgomery County, Tennessee) and is probably buried in the old City Cemetery at Clarksville where he wife Margaret Montgomery is buried.
