About Captain Hedley Thomas Wright Quick, MC
Captain Hedley Thomas Wright Quick M.C.was a member of a Special Corps under Colonel R. S.S. Baden-Powell that was sent to Kumassi on the Gold Coast in 1895/6 to take into custody King Prempeh of the Ashanti tribe.The reasons being to put an end to human sacrifice by the Ashanti's and to end slave trading and raiding. To also ensure peace and security for neighbouring tribes, and to settle the country and protect the development of trade.The Ashanti Star was awarded to him for his service in the campaign.He fought in the Anglo-Boer war with the Royal Berkshire Regiment, from 1899 to 1902 when he and others, were released by Lord Roberts at the "Nooitgedacht" Prisoner War Camp, Waterval Onder in the Eastern Transvaal. He had been captured by General De Wet's men at Vrede in the Free State, earlier in the war.Capt Quick and family were in India when World War 1 commenced and he immediately proceeded to the front with the Royal Berkshires. His wife Rosalie Sarah, daughter of Rosa Ann Rowles (nee Nelson of 1820 Settler Stock )and their three children, Gwendolen (mother of Peter Tuson Still) Thora and Hedley Jnr. then went to live in Reading Berkshire. He served throughout the war and was awarded the Military Cross for bravery. The family settled in Queenstown Cape Colony in 1920 not far from KingWilliam's Town, where Rosalie was born, and where some of the family including her mother ,were still living. Captain Quick died in CapeTown on the 3rd July 1961. His wife Rosalie Sarah passed away on the 13th September 1956.
