The BUBB and SHIRLEY Families. Continued from Page I.
After enduring great hardship in America both sisters eventually settled down in Fish Haven, Bear Lake, Idaho and lived to a great age. Maria and William had seven children, of whom Thomas, Charles Coulsen and James Frederick lived to adulthood.
Although he had no formal training, William was an accomplished artist and musician. He played in a brass band and painted scenery for theatrical productions. He also owned and played the only organ in Council Bluffs, Salt Lake City. He was the first superintendent of the Sunday school there and was also the church organist, transporting the instrument to church each Sunday.
William died in 1886 and Maria in 1925, at the age of 91 years.
Thomas and Martha had 11 children, three living to adulthood - Mary Ann, Maria Sarah and William Henry. Martha was a proficient nurse and midwife, who delivered 169 babies. Thomas died in 1910 and Martha in 1931, at the age of 99 years.
Martha and Maria, aka Esther, kept in touch with their South Africa family by corresponding with them, especially Caroline Elizabeth DOUBELL, the wife of one of their younger brothers, Edward James. Edward and Caroline named one of their sons George William SHIRLEY (SALLEY - according to records - but he always believed the name to be 'SHIRLEY').
My grandfather named one of his sons George SHIRLEY, who in turn, named his daughter Shirleen. George William SHIRLEY's eldest son Edward James, named his eldest son George Shirley.
With sincere thanks to the SHIRLEY / BUBB descendants in the USA who sent copies of their entries in 'The History of Bear Lake Pioneers', and to my cousin Joe HAWKER who so generously shared his information with me. - Millicent EMSLIE.
Conclusion of George BUBB.
