Catherine Young

On June 29, 1851, Catherine Teresa Mulligan married Robert Young at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jersey City, Hudson Co., New Jersey. Their son, William, was born in New Jersey on July 26, 1853. (NJ marriages and births, familysearch.org)

At the time of the 1860 and 1870 federal censuses, the family was living in South Bend, Indiana where Robert was working as a plasterer. By the time of the 1880 census, the family had moved to Niles Township of Berrien Co., Michigan where Robert continued to work as a plasterer and their son George was a farmer. According to the 1900 census of Niles Township, Robert had also become a farmer, he and Catherine had been married 49 years, and Catherine had had eight children of whom four were living. Their children were (in birth order); William, James (who died young), Frank, George, Lizzie (who died young), Joseph (who died young), Robert, and James.

South Bend News-Times, Fri., Aug. 31, 1917, p. 4: “Mrs. Catherine Young, 86 years old, Berrien county, Mich., died Thursday evening after an illness of complications and old age. "She is survived by her four sons, Frank of South Bend, James of Bertrand, Mich., George and Robert living at home. Two sisters, Mrs. Ann McCartney, Miss Elizabeth Mulligan of South Bend and a brother Joseph Mulligan, north of this city. "Mrs. Young was born Dec. 25, 1830, in Ireland. She was married in 1852 (sic) to Robert Young, who has been dead 17 years. She had lived on the farm in Berrien county for the past 35 years. “Funeral services of Catherine Young will be held Monday morning from the Sacred Heart church, Rev. John B. Scherer officiating.
