About Chief Assaganashkam

Chief Assaganashkam (sometimes transcribed as Assagananashkam or Assagauashkam) is not listed in the 1907 Wooster Roll, presumably because he was deceased in 1907 but he is mentioned by a number of individuals as a "grandfather" (eg #1503, Amable Wemigwans_born c. 1837 and John Nashkewa # 687; or "maternal grandfather" eg. #1407, Elizabeth Pitawanakwat_born c1830 and Mrs. Margaret Tomah # 1097; or as a "great grandfather" eg. Henry Johnson # 1022 and Joseph James # 683) or as an "ancestor" (eg. 1549, John Tobie_born c. 1819). A transcription of the 1833 Treaty of Chicago names 77 representatives of the Three Fires Confederacy who were signatories to that treaty. On that transcript #62 was a man named "Ah-sag-a-mish-cum" which phonetically sounds much like "Assaganashkam". Since Elizabeth Pitawanakwat was about age 3 in 1833 and names Assaganashkam as her grandfather there is increased likelihood that the person recorded in 1833 as "Ah-sag-amish-cum" is, indeed, "Assaganashkam".
