About Christian Harshbarger

Lived in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Sometime after 1789 he left for Botetort County, Virginia. His descendants intermarried with other families (Scots Irish) who had lived in East Hanover Township and migrated to Botetort or neighboring Rockbridge counties in Virginia.
Christian Harshbarger is believed to have been born prior to 1758 in Lancaster County, Pa. Christian's first wife was named Catherine (maiden name uncertain). Christian had at least two children by Catherine:
- David born c. 1783. He married Elizabeth Beecher May 18, 1805 in Virginia
- Catherine, born around 1782. Catherine married Peter Wilhelm c. March 26, 1801
Christian Harshbarger moved to Botetourt County sometime after 1800, as he is not listed in Lancaster Co., Pa. for 1800. He was married a second time because of the ages of his other children. These children were
- Elizabeth b.c. 1793, died after 1860; married George Kilmore Jr. October 3, 1816 in Botetourt County, Virginia.
- William, b.c. 1795, married Sally Blount Sept. 28, 1819;
- Susanna, born 1797, married John Painter October 17. 1819
- Nancy, b.c. 1799, married David Kenney on April 16, 1818

* Christian had two children christened in the Swatara Reformed Church in Jonestown, Pennsylvania. One child in 1782 and the other in 1785.
- On June 4, 1785, Christian Hershberger of East Hanover Township in County of Dauphin sold 70 acres of land to Philip Baumgardner of same place for 60 pounds in consideration of a debt owed to Philip Baumgardner of 120 pounds, due March 7, 1787 (Source: Dauphin Co. Deed Bk 1 p. 26).
- Christian appears on the East Hanover Township, Dauphin County tax rolls for years 1786, 1787, and 1789.
- Christian first appears on the Botetourt County, Virginia tax rolls in 1798.
- Christian was living on Purgatory Creek, Botetourt County, Virginia in years 1800-1817.
- Purchased 70 acres of land on June 9, 1818 for $560 from John and Mary Alvison.The land was located on Runnick's Run, a branch of the James river (Source: Botetourt Co Deed Bk 13 p. 199).
- Purchased 47 acres of land on June 24, 1818 for $100 on Runnick's Run from Mark Dempsy the son and legatee of William Demsey deceased (Source: Botetourt Co Deed Bk 13 p. 286).
- Christian was living on Runnick's Run, Botetourt County in years 1818-1820.
- Purchased 80 acres of land from James Peary of Tazwell County on March 15, 1820 for $250.Land was located by the water of Runnick's Run a branch of the James River in Botetourt County.
