Biographical Summary
"The Hon. Sir James Carmichael, of Bonington, co. Lanark, 5th and yst. s. of James (Carmichael), 1st Lord Carmichael [S.], by Agnes, da. of William Wilkie, of Foulden, was Knighted at Oatlands, Surrey, 2 July 1632 ; was executor to his yr. br., Capt. the Hon. John Carmichael, in 1644 ; was a Col. in the Army of Charles II at Dunbar, in 1650, and having purchased probably about 1676, a blank warrant for a Baronetcy, for £100, was apparently "at once recognised as a Baronet," as, undoubtedly, his son was, though there is no record of such creation in the Great Seal Register or apparently elsewhere, and neither pedigree nor arms are recorded. He m. Margaret, da. of Sir John Grierson, of Lag. She d. before 27 July 1665. He d. in or shortly before 1681."
