James Carmichael, Lord Carmichael

Biographical Summary

"Sir James Carmichael was born 1579.

He married (contract dated 1 November 1603) Agnes Wilkie, daughter of William Wilkie, burgess of Lanark, ancestor of the family of Foulden, and sister-german of Robert Wilkin or Wilkie, minister at Douglas and afterwards Glasgow."

He was Master of Ceremonies to the future King Charles I in 1623 and held the office of Chamberlain of Scotland between 1627 and 1630. He was created 1st Baronet Carmichael, of Westraw and Hyndford, co. Lanark [Nova Scotia] on 17 July 1627.

He held the office of Sheriff of Lanarkshire in 1632 and was appointed Knight on 2 July 1632. He was appointed Privy Counsellor in 1634 and on 18 September 1634 he was appointed Lord Justice-Clerk, on the decease of Sir George Elphinstoun, and Master of the Ceremonies in Scotland.

On 3 March 1633/34 he held a charter to the Carmichael Estates, after succeeding from his distant cousin, Sir John Carmichael of Carmichael.

On 14 October 1636, on being appointed Treasurer-Depute, he resigned the office of Lord Justice-Clerk and Master of Ceremonies in favour of Sir John Hamilton of Orbistoun. He was admitted as an Ordinary Lord of Session on 6 March 1639, and he was also a Commissioner for holding Parliament.

He was one of the 'engagers' for the rescue of King Charles I and as a reward for his services he was created a Peer by Charles I at Carisbrooke Castle 27 December 1647 by the title 1st Lord Carmichael, with remainder to his heirs-male whatever.

He held the office of Lord Justice Clerk in 1649, where in 1654 he was dismissed from his offices by Cromwell, and fined £2,000 by the Act of Grace.
