About John Maxwell of Barncleugh
COLONEL JOHN MAXWELL
Colonel John Maxwell is the eldest son of Sir James Maxwell of Calderwood's third Marriage to Lady Margaret Cunningham. He was born about the year 1611 and fell at the battle of Dunbar on 3 September 1650. George Monk, Duke of Albermarle, afterwards had this to say of him: "These are to certify all whome these may concerne, that Col. John Maxwell served as a Lietent-Colonell and Colonell in the warres of Ireland from the first begining untill the year 1650, when he came over into Scotland, and was killed in the engagement att Dunbarre, in his Majesties service".
