About Margaret Cunningham

LADY MARGARET CUNNINGHAM

Lady Margaret Cunningham is the daughter of James Cunningham, 7th Earl of Glencairn and his wife Margaret Ann Cunningham The Scots Peerage IV: 245

According to the late Reverend John Anderson, writing in his account of the Earls of Glencairn for the Scots Peerage, Margaret Cunningham: "As the future spouse ' of James Hamilton of Evandale, son and heir of James Hamilton of Liberton, she had a charter of the liferent of the lands of Crawford John and others 23 December 15977 She must have been divorced from her husband, who was alive in 1611 as in a charter of 28 August 1610 she is described as the 'future spouse' of Sir James Maxwell of Calderwood. She had certainly led a very unhappy life with her first husband, as she speaks in her will of the 'crosse of an unloving husband who proved most unnatural to me.' She was therefore no doubt glad to marry, as his third wife, on 8 September 1610, Sir James Maxwell. She had issue by both marriages, and it is a curious fact that her eldest daughter by her first husband, Jean Hamilton, was married to James Maxwell, afterwards the first baronet of Calderwood, the second son by his second wife of Margaret Cunningham's second husband." The Scots Peerage IV: 245
