Footnotes

  1. From the foregoing reports of Mr Burke it appears that Col John Page, progenitor of the Page Family in Virginia was the son of Francis Page of Bedfont, Middlesex County, England as stated on the tombstone at St Mary's Church but beyond this all is for the present conjecture owing to destruction of the records in that parish. It is highly probable that he was a relative of Sir Gregory Page Bart of Greenwich County of Kent England as their arms closely resemble each other and their crests are identical. (Page, p. 38)
  2. According to the original tombstones at Williamsburg and Rosewell, Col John Page and Alice his wife had two children viz 1 Francis Page eldest born at Williamsburg Va AD 1657 2 Matthew Page born at Williamsburg Va AD 1659 (Page, p. 40)
  3. The Williamsburg branch of the Page family in Virginia became extinct upon the death of Capt Francis Page without surviving issue The second son Matthew Page had an only son as we shall see from whom all the others are descended. (Page, p. 52)

(Research): COLONEL JOHN PAGE From Alice Stayner Page of Austin, Tx. 1971: She lists info on our Page family-saying that Col. John emigrated to Va. abt 1650...and lists his childen...Also that the graves of John Page , his wife Alice & those of Francis Page, wife & dtr. are in the Bruton Parish Churchyard, Williamsburg, Va.

From «i»Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them...With Genealogies«/i»...by by Thomas Allen Glenn 1899. Some of his land holdings are given in the book as: 200 acres of land situated on the North side of the Yorke river...23 Aug 1653 from Richard Bennett Esq. 850 acres situated on the South side of the freshes of the Yorke river... Also grants of 1900 acres of Middle Plantation in York Co., 2700 acres in Lancaster Co. within the freshes of the Rappahannock river. eighteen miles above Nansemum town called the "Page's Pilgrimage" and other tracks in later days. The will of John Page of Middle Plantation in Yorke County, Virginia Esq. being in good health, good memory and understanding (praised by God)and signed "the fifth day of March the fifth yeare of ye Raigne of our sovereign King James ye Second Anno Dom 168? and proved by the oaths of Henry Tyler and Alexander Bonnyman 24 Feb 169? having been presented in court by Captain Francis Page, one of the executors. In some respects a very curious documents. Col Page gives very explicit directions regarding his internment: (As written) "My body to be remit to ye earth, to be decently buryed with Christian buriall, according to ye reights and ceremonies of ye Church of England in ye Church yard of Bruton P'ish, where I now live (if I happen to dye in or near that P'ish)within 10 foot of ye South side of ye Church wall from ye Chancel Door to ye East to ye East end of ye Church. And that over my grave erected with birck three foot six inches above ground. be laid a pollisht black marble stone of good demention." He names his wife Alice Page, his deceased brother Matthew Page, whose son Matthew Page had been redeemed out of slavery in Algiers, his own two sons Francis & Matthew Page & his brother Robert Page late of "Hatton, Hownsley Heath (Bedfont Parish, Middlesex, England)& Robert's son John. He also names others, inclluding grandchildren. We know from the will that he held leases on houses in Longditch, Westminster, England that yielded him 40 pds per annum. He also owned a large interest in various ships... Eighteen gold rings valued at 20 shillings each were given to friends as mourning rings. That Col. Page was a man of considerable education as well as a successful merchant is evident from a letter extant written to him by him to "his loving son, Captain Matthew Page".The occasion being a little book that he had prepared in 1688 as a New Year's gift for his son. of which he says: "Set no lightly by my gift. but esteem those fatherly instructions above earthly riches. Consider the dignity of your soul, and at no time slip whereby you may, with God's assistance, work out your salvation with fear and trembling." The gift was a manuscript on parchment in Colonel Page's own handwriting and strongly bound...It was afterwards printed from the original manuscript by Henry B. Ashmead, Philadelphia. The little work is known as "The Deed of Gift".

The Pages of Virginia arrived relatively early in the colonial period. The «i»John D. Rockefeller«/i» «i»Library«/i» in Wiliamsburg reports that Col. John arrived in Virginia with wife Alice c1653.
There were several members of the name only distantly related. John Page, the immigrant, and his relatives and descendants are essentially of one line. This is our line: The Rosewell Pages.
The life & transactions from the time of his arrival we know very little, except that he had sundry patents for large tracts of land & became influential in the affairs of the colony. THE ROAD TO SUCCESS The Page clan of Bedfont and Hatton in Middlesex, England, during the 1600's was an old line middle class family known for it strong ties to St. Mary's Church where many of its early generations were buried. Pages were several wardens of the church..the secular line provided many surveyors and overseers. He gained early success as a merchant, first in England and later in Virginia. He emigrated in 1653 at the age of 26 and was granted 200 acres of land: The name of John Page, merchant, in the first listing dates his initial entry into Virginia. That there were others listed for whose expenses he was responsible substantiates that he had established himself as a party of moderate means before coming to Virginia. (unlike hundreds of impoverished, indentured immigrants) The location of his property was later given as being in King William County and "on the north shore of Yorke"...at the time the Pamunkey and York were not distinguished as separate rivers-but as alternate names for the same body of of water stretching from Manquin to Mobjack Bay. He prospered and in a short while sent for his family and others...including his wife, sister and sister-in-law. His brother Matthew had also migrated to Virginia... there were 17 new arrivals about 1654. One of his tracts of land was settled as Mehixton plantation, and remained in the Page family for four generations. John Page probably lived there until he moved to York County in 1660. By the early 1670's the family made its home at the Middle Plantation, so named because it was half way between the James and York rivers. It was a strategic location, well suited to John Page's trading interests. It was Middle Plantation that was later to become the city of Williamsburg and capital of Virginia. His brother Matthew's plantation was near by-called Neck of Land. John Page first joined the militia and was mentioned in 1675 as a major. Major Page prospered as a merchant and tobacco plantation owner. He acquired ownership or interest in several ships. Recognition came to him early in his being named a justice. He then became a Burgess and soon after as appointed to the Gavernor's Council. He was honored by being named to head the miltia of York County-which brought him the rank of Colonel. His portrait, painted by Lely in London was given, along with several other Page portraits to the College of William and Mary. The wealthy plalnters of Virginia were not in the main from the aristocratic ranks of the mother country, but they quickly learned to emulate the English lords. Their power flowed from the wealth of their immense land parcels and their family alliances. John Page was afforded opportunities beyond private venture and service to state in both religious involvement and dedication to education. To both causes he proved devoted. He was not a supporter of Nathaniel Bacon who declared opposition to Governor Berkeley. This resulted in what was known as: "Bacon's Rebellion". During the rebellion four women, wives of prominent men were taken hostage. There seems little doubt the Alice Page was among them, and the incident substantiates his loyalty to the Royal Governor. John Page is listed as among the "great losers in their Estates" in a report of "Persons who Suffered by Bacon's Rebellion." Whatever losses he sustained must have been offset by crown favors providing a quick recovery. He obviously considered himself an Englishman and ingratiated himself with the king by proposing regulation of the tobacco trade thru the imposition of duty. This may be the forerunner of the despised navigation laws that his descendants were to condemn. By the closing decade of the 17th C. there was a need for a colonial school as an alternative to sending sons to England to be educated...At James City in February 1690 Col. Page was the "first mover" in initiating public discussion of the need to establish a college. It soon gained public support and the House of Burgesses petitioned King William for a charter. It was granted in 1693 and the cornerstone was laid in 1695. Named for the king and queen, the College of William and Mary became the second college in the colonies after Harvard. As indicated by the lanquage in his Deed of Gift, Colonel Page must have been formerly educated or was very well read. This could account for his interest in and support of education in Virginia. This attitude was reflected in his descendants down through the years. Col. Page was a founder of Bruton Parish Church, giving the land on which it was built. CHARITY AND GRACE Some insight into the charity and grace of John Page can be found in the story of one of his indentured servants who had born an illegitimate child. According to the law of the day, she was to receive 39 lashes and have her indenture extended 2 years (wonder what the father got?) Col. John saved her from the punishment by guaranteeing the vestrymen of the parish that he would supply enough tobacco to pay for food and clothing for the bastard until it was grown. He was just as solititous of his slaves, requesting of his heirs that they provide for his Negroes in their old age with as much attention to their needs as when they were youthful and fully productive. According to state land patent books, John Page was among the largest Virginia landholders of the 17th C.

WILLIAMSBURG, THE BRUTON PARISH CHURCHYARD The Page Monuments My children visited Williamsburg in 1985 and saw the Page monuments in the churchyard. Several family members are buried there. Col. John's reads: «u»East face«/u»: Col. John Page Died Jan 23, 1692 Aged 65 «u»South face«/u»: Erected in Jan 1878 to replace the original tombstone «u» West face«/u»: He Being Dead Yet Speaketh Heb. 11:4 «u»North face«/u» Coat of Arms and inscription-Copied from the orginal Tombstone: Here lieth in hope of a joyfull resurrection the Body of Colonel John Page of Bruton Parish Esquire One of their Majesties Council in the Dominion of Virginia who Departed this life on the 23rd of January in the year of our Lord 169 1/2(missing section) Aged 65 Page historian Richard Channing Moore Page suggests that the omission of a bordure from the Page coat-of-arms is apparently because the sculptor, in error, placed in on the arms of Alice Luckin Page. [There is also a tombstone within the church for Col. John that reads as above.]
