Halcot O. Estes Family

Minnie Riley married Dr. Estes who helped form the Dental Society in Tampa, Fla. They had 3 children – Verner W. Estes, Lillian Estes, and Halcot Osgood Estes, who was born in Palatka, Fla. in 1887. After Dr. estes’ death Minnie married W.L. Spitler and had 3 more children, Hortense, Walter and Mary. Mary and Walter are the only two living now. Mary is now living in Delaware with her daughter Myrnie and family – her name is Cason (until she married Jim Needles).

On my side Davis – I was born in Carthage, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, January 6, 1888. I had 4 brothers – Bert, Leo, Frank and Vincent. Both my parents came from England bringing the two oldest boys Bert and Leo. The other three of us were born in Carthage. My father was Auditor of a Railroad and we moved to Chicago where he was Auditor for the Chicago and Alton Railroad. I went to school in Chicago. Our Dad became interested in Florida and bought property in West Tampa and Gary, and tried to raise oranges.

I had taken a business course and went to work for the Tampa Tribune and later for the Turner Music Co. I met Halcot Estes who worked in a drug store and we were married in 1913. Hal was then a traveling salesman for Southern Drug Co. out of Jacksonville. We lived in Orlando for a short time and then moved to Tampa. We had 4 children – Lawrence, Kenneth, Betty and Bob. Hal bought a drug store in Haines City and also became a Real Estate Dealer. He built the Van Buren Hotel and operated it a short time until he sold it. Also bought the Alturas property. We moved to Lake Wales to be nearer the grove.
