The son of Israel M. & Mary Groff, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Lower Mahonoy Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 4" tall with dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Millersburg, Dauphin County, June 18, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 22 as a private with Co. K, 26th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg September 6, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 7 as a private with Co. A, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.
He married Catherine Spatz and fathered Francis Grant (b. 08/27/68), Elizabeth A. (b. 1870), William (b. @1873), Jennie J. (b. 07/01/74 - married Charles Garwood), Sarah "Sadie" (b. @1880 - married Gilbert Wheat), and Samuel (b. 1886). In 1880, he lived with his family in Middletown, Dauphin County, but by 1900 was a resident of Cloud County, Kansas.
