About David Hugh McAlpin

David Hunter McAlpin (1816-1901). tobacco manufacturer and philantropist; owner of the tobacco firm D.H. McAlpin Co..

McAlpin was born in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York on November 8th, 1816. The fourth of eight children, McAlpinwasthe son of James and Jane Hunter McAlpin. McAlpin moved to New York in 1836, where he opened up a tobacco store. Within a few years, McAlpin expanded to several branches. McAlpin introduced Virginia tobacco to the public known as "Virgin Leaf", In 1857, McAlpin.entered into a partnership with the firm John Cornish & Co., tobacco manufacturers. McAlpin bought the firm out in 1860, and renamed it D.H. McAlpin Co.

McAlpin was married three times.[4] His first wife was Adelaide Rose, daughter of Joseph Rose Jr., whom he married in 1846. The ceremony was held at the Market Street Church, which eventually became the Church of Sea and Land. Adelaide died in 1870. His second wife was Mrs A.D. Chamberlain (Adelia) whom he married in 1873 and who died in 1891. McAlpin's third wife, whom he married in 1892, and his third wife was Adelaide's sister, Cordelia (Rose) Shackelton, widow of Dr. Judson G. Shackelton.

David Hunter McAlpin's will is is filed in the Morris County Surrogate's Office (New Jersey). The total value of his estate (probate and non-probate) was in the range of $7 million. He left his residence (on West 55th Street) to his wife (Cordelia Rose McAlpin), as well as a yearly income of $18,000 (which was in addition to what she had received in a prenuptial agreement). His son, William Willett McAlpin, was one of the residuary legatees under the will.

Among his children was a General and a prominent physician.
