Ephraim Brevard, was the author of the Mechlenburg Declaration. He died from dysentery after being held prisoner at the surrender of Charleston. He was sent home to recover, but died a few miles before actually reaching his destination. Brevard College in North Carolina is named for him as well as the counties in N .C. and Florida.
