About Jane Brevard

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA. DAR Ancestor #: A014072

In the book Peidmont Partisan, by Chalmers Davidson, it is told Jane Brevard was an old woman when her husband was away and she heard the British were coming...she sent her grown daughters to hide and was left to defend her home when the British Dragoons rode up to her home. They set it on fire and she ran back and forth trying to save some of the furniture. The soldiers laughed and threw the furniture back in the flames then tore her dress.

Her son, Ephraim Brevard, was the author of the Mechlenburg Declaration. He died from dysentery after being held prisoner at the surrender of Charleston. He was sent home to recover, but died a few miles before actually reaching his destination. Brevard College in North Carolina is named for him as well as the counties in N .C. and Florida.
