George was the eldest of four children b. to Rev. Thomas Franklin Day, b. August 31, 1852 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania and d. February 15, 1943 in Co Ca, Lang Son, Vietnam & Ada A. Kingsbury, b. February 1852 in New York and d. 1930 in San Anselmo, Marin County, California.

Thomas & Ada married June 29, 1881 in American Fork, Utah, United States.

Their children were:

2) Edward Carrol Day, b. 1884 –
3) Isabella Day, b. 1888 and d. 1959
4) Clarence Burton Day, b. 1889 and d. 1987

In his 1910 U.S. passport application, he is described as 27 yrs. old, 5'7" tall, high forehead, blue eyes, straight nose, small mouth, square chin, brown hair, light complexion, oval face.

In his November 19, 1917 U.S. passport application, George Martin Day declared that he was the son of Thomas Franklin Day, b. in Grove City, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He had resided outside of the U.S. in Russia from October 9, 1909 to March 31, 1913 and October 6, 1913 to April 10, 1917.

He was described as 35 yrs. old, 6'7" tall, with a high forehead and blue-gray eyes, a straight nose, round chin, brown hair, fair complexion and an oval face. His permanent residence at that time was in New York City was he was the secretary of the YMCA. He was planning on returning to Russia on December 1, 1917 via Great Britain and Norway on YMCA business, sailing aboard the Adriatic.

Funeral Rites for Former Oxy Professor

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Church of the Recessional, Forest Lawn, for Dr. George Martin Day, 75, professor emeritus at Occidental College, who died Saturday in a King City Hospital. Dr. Remsen D. Bird, formerly president of Occidental, will officiate.

Dr. Day was injured in an automobile accident near King City April 1 while driving from his home in Palo Alto to spend Easter with a daughter in Los Angeles.

Born in Utah, Dr. Day was educated at Hamilton College, Clinton, New York. He graduated from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1908, and though ordained a Presbyterian minister, was in educational work most of his life. He had been on the Occidental University faculty since 1923. He retired in 1950. His field was Sociology.

From 1919 to 1927, Dr. Day was in YMCA work, stationed in Russia. He was secretary of the California Committee of the Russian Student Fund. Since retirement, he was a research scholar at Stanford University in Russian educational techniques. He was active in the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association, and president from 1936-1948.

His wife died a year ago. He is survived by identical twin daughters, Mrs. Margaret Walker and Mrs. Carroll Locke; two brothers, Clarence and Edward, and a sister, Miss Isabella Day. Inurnment will be in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni International Scholarship Fund, in care of Miss Elizabeth A. Woods, 1777 Campus Road, Los Angeles.
