Dr. Clarence Burton Day

Clarence Burton Day was born in American Fork, Utah, on 1 September, 1889, and died in Duarte, Califorrnia, on 7 January, 1987. He was a graduate of Hamilton College, Class of 1911. Following graduation he attended the San Francisco Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1914. He then spent a year as a research fellow at New College, Edinburgh, and Mansfield College, Oxford, and then began missionary work in China at Hangchow Christian College. Occasionally he returned to the U.S., pursuing graduate work at the University of Chicago (A.M., Chinese Buddhism, 1923), Hartford Seminary (Ph.D., 1930), and the San Francisco Seminary (S.T.M., 1931). He spent the rest of his career teaching at the following colleges: Hangchow, San Francisco Seminary, Forman Christian College (LaHore, India), and Lincoln College (PA).

Dr. Day was a Presbyterian missionary teacher in China and India. He was born in American Fork, Utah, and spent his childhood in San Anselmo, California. He was educated at Hamilton College, New York, and San Francisco Theological Seminary. In 1915 he went to China, first to the Nanking Language School, then to Ningpo for evangelistic work, and then as a teacher at Hangchow College. Except for furloughs, he remand with Hangchow College to 1943. He spent seven months in a concentration camp, and returned on the Gripsholm.

He taught at San Francisco Theological Seminary, and Centre College, Danville, Kentucky. In 1947 he went to Lahore, India (now Pakistan) to teach at Forman Christian College, and a year later returned to Hangchow College, later University, serving to 1951. He then returned to America.
