About Dr Paul Micou, M.D.

Paul Micou was born in France about 1658. He was living in Nantes, France, when the Edict which protected the French Protestants was revoked. He fled for his life, as did many others, going first to England. He was 27 years of age at the time, and may have been married or he may have married in England. He came to America before 1695. Quotes in the Huguenot Society Magazine says, "Paul Micou is thought to have brought his wife and elder children with him. He certainly brought his library, pictures, and plate." He founded an estate he called "Port Micou" and had large land holdings and many slaves. He was also Justice of the Peace in Essex Co. VA from 1700 to 1720.

Paul Micou married Margaret Cammack in 1710 in Old Rappahannoch and Essex Counties [Book W3, Original Source Page, Indexes to Virginia Marriages]

9 children.

Named for Paul Micou, a Huguenot, who began purchasing property here in 1697, Port Micou was a wharf complex for much of the 18th century. It was acquired by Robert Paine Waring in 1835 and the two structures were built either by Waring or his son-in-law Richard Baylor, both prosperous landowners. The large two-story granary, notable for its fine workmanship, originally stored wheat that was shipped to Tidewater cities. The functionally related dwelling (shown above) has but one room and a passage on its main floor. Only with imagination can one picture the hum of activity that once took place at this now quiet and lonely place.”
