1 Biography 1.1 Marriages 1.2 Will 2 Sources Biography John Mann(Man) was a merchant trading with Spain. According to Ferris, 'Tudor subsidy assessments identified him as Poole’s richest inhabitant'. [1] As a prominent businessman, he was elected Mayor of Poole in 1539, 1549, 1556 and 1558 [2]

It was proved on 13th June 1578. This will gives most of his estate to Edward Man, John's second son by his second wife Amye Ryves. Bartholomew, the first son of that marriage had a conditional bequest . William, John and Thomas, the son's by his first wife together with their heirs received little or nothing.

William was to receive £20 but in a codicil (seemingly written the same day) this was reduced by the £13 10s that he owed to another Merchant. John was to receive £10 but it is clear that his father does not know where he is, or whether he is alive or dead ' I will that if my sonne John Man be dead or doe die before the tenne poundes to which I have given him doe come to his handes I will that the same tenne poundes shalle remaine and be to my sonne Edward Manne. And I will that my sonne John Man neyther aine of his children shall have aine parte of my lands for he hath had his [quote?] of my goods alreadie' Thomas was initially bequeathed the tenancy for life of a house together with other goods, a silver salte and an income of £5 a year. In the codicil , his father had changed his mind ' Nowe I calling my selfe to Remembrance and also waying all thinges indifferently have thought it good not to leave unto my sonneThomas Man anie parte or parcel thereof unto him before bequeathed in my last will and Testament but that any legacy or commodities whatsoever theirein appointed him shal be utterly voide and of none effect towardes him, that is that he shall have neither the five poundes by the yeare with the silver sault, neyther such implements and stuffe as was appointed him, neither the lese of the house that John Robson now dwelling in, for he hath had his parte sufficient of my goodes alreadie. Bartholomew first son of John Man's second wife Amy, received a conditional bequest Whereas a guarantee of a somme of money is pretended to be given by my late wife Amye Man unto my sonne Bartholomew Man and as he saith to be paide by me of the which I am ignorante of for that in tyme to come I would have no contention between my executor and my said sonne Bartholomew Man [concerning?] the same. My will and meaninge is that if he my sonne Bartholomew Man do renounce forsake and refute all such [attended?] right or title as he doth challenge by the aforesaide guarente from my saide wife, then I give and bequeathe unto my saide sonne Batholomew Man Two hundred and threescore pounds of lawfull money of England upon that condition aforesaid or ells not. More I give to my sonne Bartholomew Man Three goblets of silver, one salt of silver with a cover of silver, one dosen of silver spoones Cecilie Haviland ,daughter from first marriage bequeathed £16 Edith Lewes ?(or Leven), daughter from first marriage bequeathed 20s, her son's Stevin Whittaker and Richard Whittaker £5 each 'Agnes Weeks(?), daughter from first marriage 20s daughter Amy Pitt, daughter from second marriage £10 Edward (and heirs of his body) was made de facto heir and by default Bartholomew, by default to Amye Pitt and by defaulte to Cecilie Haviland. Edward was bequeathed, some silver three of my best goblets of silver, two of my best saltes of silver with one cover of silver, one dozen of my best silver spoones. He was to receive the residue, after debts paid of his father's money including £800 that was owed to his father by John Crooke and 'others'. He also inherited seven houses plus gardens in Poole (and any others not mentioned in the will) . Edward was made sole executor.
