About Effie Anne Rissler

GEDCOM Note

From the memories of Mary Kathleen Finley Hughes, written Spring, 2000.

In 1917 or 1918, Ross Finley, husband of Anna Rissler, developed an infection in his left leg. The leg had to be amputated below the knee. The surgery was performed at their home in Harmony, IN, and the docotrs were Dr. George Finley, his uncle, and Dr. Ross S. Rissler, Anna's brother. Agnes Finley was their helper.

From the memories of Jerry Hoffman, written Spring, 2000

My mother's mother, Agnes Marie (Finley) Trippett was from Harmony in Clay County, Indiana and her mother was Effie Ann (Rissler) Finley from just across the line in Putnam County, Indiana. I knew (and loved) my grandmother very well as did many other people in the Greencastle area. Her naturally sunny disposition was an inspiration and she made everyone feel welcome at her home for all of her 92 years on this earth. She told me how her grandmother (Elizabeth Boyd, wife of John T. Rissler) was a short stocky woman who was also very warm and welcoming. As you arrived at her house she would come to the porch, wave and in a strong voice tell you to come right in. My grandmother also remembered Christmas at her grandparents home (John T. Rissler) in the early 1900's, where the room with the tree was closed off and children were sternly warned not to go in until Christmas Day. There weren't many gifts back then but she remembered getting an orange one year. She also remembered many visits, as a youngster, to her Aunt Ella Rightsell who lived in a white frame farm house east of the Huffman covered bridge. Her mother Effie and Ella were very close.

In the mid 1970's I began doing genealogy and she took me to meet Alma Rissler who was living alone in a nice ranch style home on a hill overlooking the Big Walnut Creek bottomlands. It was a beautiful summer day with the birds singing and bob-whites calling and I remember thinking what a peaceful setting she had above the valley. We also visited the Wesley Chapel, Croys Creek and Boone-Hutcheson cemeteries where many of my Grandmother's people are buried.
