Elizabeth was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Elizabeth HIdebrand was born in the Cherokee Nation (East) in 1801, the daughter of Michael Hildebrand and Nancy Martin, a Cherokee. [1] She married James Pettit, a white man, about 1827. They were the parents of Andrew, Minerva, William, and Franklin. They separated at one point, [2] but reconciled and had more children. The 1835 Cherokee Census shows a family of six living on Conasauga Creek (now Tennessee). [3] James died in 1842 [4] and Elizabeth married Daniel Ward, another white man, in 1843. They emigrated to Indian Territory and were the parents of one child, a daughter Amelia. Elizabeth and her children appear on the 1851 Drennan Roll living in the Illinois District. [5] Elizabeth married for a third time in 1853 to Robert Armstrong. They had no children. Robert died in 1868. The 1883 Cherokee census lists Elizabeth Armstrong, age 82, with son William as her guardian, living in the Tahlequah District. [6] Elizabeth died in 1887 and is buried at the Citizens Cemetery, Muskogee County, Oklahoma. [7]
