About Elizabeth Burroughs

Disputed Origins

Her parentage is disputed. Some people say that she was the daughter of John Jessup and Joanna Kerrich Jessup. Others say that she was the daughter of Thomas Pettit and Christian Mellows Pettit and the widow of a Mr. Reed.

About 1664 in Newtown, Elizabeth became the second wife of John Burroughs. They had one son together: John Jr. in 1665.

Various online sources state, with no evidence, that John Burroughs's second wife was Elizabeth (Jessup) Reed, the sister of his first wife Joanna. It is then very difficult to explain why she named in her willa sister Hannah Pettit. If Elizabeth were a Jessup, we would need a likely candidate for a Hannah Jessup who married a Pettit, and none presents herself. We would also need an Elizabeth Jessup who married a Reed, and again, we are at a loss. On the other hand, there is a natural reason for how she erroneously became a Jessop -- confusion with John Burrough's first wife, which at some point morphed into the statement that they were sisters.

Research Notes

Some online sources say Elizabeth was born 1637 at Exeter, but a trustworthy source remains to be found and included here. We find clues about her parentage in her will and that of her second husband. Elizabeth names a sister Hannah Pettit, while her husband John Burroughs's will was witnessed by Thomas Pettit, who was later named overseer of thewill.

Thomas Pettit and Christian Mellowes removed to Newtown in the 1650s and had a daughter Hannah b. 1647and also a son Thomas Jr. So this is suggestive that Elizabeth was another of their children.
