About Elizabeth (Eliza) Bean (Mathey)

'~• from Michael M. van Beuren (1952-), member of the extended Bean family:

It is said that Eliza was born in Norristown but I've not seen documentation for this. Her future husband wrote that she was a school-girl in Norristown. All the while, her father John had a "shop" at Willow and Broad in Philadelphia. The father John Matheys was known for his State Sen. post in PA with prior service in the War of 1812, He was later led the 1st Montg, Troop of Dragoons (see project ), as were several of his sons along with Jesse Weber Bean.

Eliza's husband Jesse was 5 years younger . They married at an older age than most couples of that era. Together they had three sons. The first, Thomas, died at age one and was buried in Evansburg where the remains of many Beans lie in the St. James PE churchyard.

Eliza died young, in 1852 whereupon Jesse moved to Virginia, on or about 1853, leaving his remaining two sons behind. David, age 6 and Howell, age 3, were left to be raised in the Matheys family.

At a tender age, David became a Civil War soldier and, later, a post-war Reconstruction soldier, leaving a wife and child behind in Philadelphia. His regiment transferred to the Southwest where he deserted. Years later, he drowned in Yuma, AZ territory. Most of his then existing had lost track of his whereabouts and never heard of his death.

Howell, lived well into the 20th century (Elkins Park) and donated family materials to the Hist. Soc. of Montgomery County

Eliza was buried at the old Baptist Church near Bryn Mawr, Lower Merion, PA

Most of what I write of here is based on my own research. Other genealogies c.2023 contain errors about this branch of the Bean/Matheys family. (~• MMvB, geni vol. curator)

  • Lot 80 Grave 5
  • (part of) Accession No. 8089 (8/14/1929) Presented by Howell E. Bean (son) of (then) 305 Ashbourne Road, Elkins Park, PA. The Historical Society of Montgomery County (PA) includes: A daguerrotype (center) of Eliza Matheys; (left) of Howell E. Bean; and (right) of David M. Bean. (these are set as profile pictures on this site) also: a photo of Elizabeth's sister, Hannah Matheys, who seems to have died a spinster.
  • the variant spellings of Mathey are Mattheys, Mathews & Mathys (etc)

remote pedigree

Getting granular: Anna Esther Barndollar is both a great aunt of Elizabeth's husband Jesse and marginally related to her mother Amy née Zell.
