About Elizabeth Sarah Blackwell
Elizabeth was the daughter of John Steptoe of Lancaster County, Virginia who was born about 1673 in England. Her mother's name was Elizabeth -- whom it appears she was named after. Two of her older brothers are said to have been born in Northumberland County so it is likely that she and her other two siblings were as well. About 1730 she married Samuel Blackwell of "Walnut Lodge" in Northumberland County, Virginia. He was a prominent & influential merchant of Northumberland County. Samuel & Elizabeth had a large family of eleven children:

- Joseph, who md. Hannah Shapleigh;

- Ann, [Ann Blackwell] who md. John Blackwell;
- Judith, who md. Bennett Price;
- Thomas, who md. Judith Grant; &
- David, who md. Ann Lewis.
