Elizabeth Swetland

Elizabeth Tyng, eldest daughter of Captain William Tyng, was born in England, 1638; married, in 1656, Captain Thomas Brattle, and they were the parents of Elizabeth, wife of John Eyre, the parents of Katherine Eyre (Jeffries) Noyes, second wife of Dr. Oliver Noyes.

"He [William Brattleboro] married c. 1656 in Boston to Elizabeth TYNG who was born 6 February 1637/38 in England and died 9 November 1682 at Boston. (Her tragic death is recorded in Judge SEWALL's Diary.)"

Thomas Brattle, born about 1624, merchant of Boston in 1656, was a member of the Artillery Company in 1675, captain in the militia, and commander of several expeditions against the hostile Indians. He was one of the founders of the Old South Church; a non-resident Representative for Lancaster in 1671-2, for Concord in 1678-9; one of the Commissioners to King Philip at Taunton in 1671; Selectman of Boston in 1679, and Treasurer of Selectmen in 1680.
He was early and largely interested in the purchase of lands on the Kennebec River. In 1670 he purchased of John Payne an interest in certain iron works, foundry, etc., at Concord, and so far augmented his possessions there by subsequent purchases, that at the time of his death they formed no inconsiderable portion of his estate.* The estate was appraised at ,£7827.16.10, and, says Savage, was probably the largest in New England.
He was married probably in 1656-7 to Elizabeth, daughter of Captain William and Elizabeth (Coytemore) Tyng. According to Savage she was born Feb. 6, 1638, perhaps in England, but was bapt. here May 23, 1641. She died Nov. 9, 1682, at Boston. The manner of her death is recorded by Bradstreet in his Journal, and by Judge Sewall and Noadiah Russell in their diaries. Sewall's account is as follows:

"Thursday, Nov. 9, 1682, Cousin Daniel Quincy* marries Mrs. Anna Shepardf before John Hull, Esq.,}: Samuel Nowell, Esq., and many persons present, almost Captain Brattle's great hall full, Capt. B. and Mrs. Brattle there for two. Mr. Willard began with prayer—Mr. Thomas Shepard concluded. As he was praying, cousin Savage, mother Hull, wife and self came in. A good space after, when had eaten cake and drunk wine and beer plentifully, we were called into the great hall to sing. In singing time Mrs. Brattle goes out, being ill; most of the company go away, thinking it a qualm or some fit; but she grows worse, speaks not a word, and so dies away in her chair, I holding her feet, for she had slipped down. At length, out of the kitchen we carry the chair, and her in it, into the wedding hall, and after a while lay the corpse of the dead aunt in the bride's bed; so that now the strangeness and horror of the thing filled the (just now) joyous house with ejulation. The bridegroom and bride lie at Mrs. Airs (Eyre's), son-in-law to the deceased, going away like persons put to flight in battle."

Thomas Brattle died April 5th, 1683, and was buried on the 9th, though Savage prefers that he died July 22, 1683.

  • Daniel Quincy, son of Colonel Edmund Quincy by his wife Joanna, born Feb. 7, 1651, member of the Artillery Company in 1675, a goldsmith by trade, died 1690. He left an only son John, born in 1689, who was the great-grandfather of John Quincy Adams. Edmund, a younger brother of Daniel Quincy, was the ancestor of the distinguished Josiah Quincy, President of Harvard College.
  • t Anna or Hannah Shepard was a niece of Mrs. Brattle, her parents being Kev. Thomas Shepard, of Charlestown, and Hannah, daughter of William Tyng. The Mr. Thomas Shepard alluded to was her brother, he having but two years before succeeded his father as minister of the church at Charlestown.
  • J John Hull was Master of the Mint of Massachusetts, Treasurer of the State in 1676, and died Sept. 29,1683. Judge Sewall married his only daughter Hannah, Feb. 14, 1658, and "it is said that when dressed for the wedding and in presence of the guests, her father placed her in his large scales, and piled on the silver shillings in the other until they weighed her down." Judith, the wife of John Hull, was a sister of Col. Edmund Quincy.
