About Ellyn Baldwin

Ellen Apuke/Pooke (Her husband's will refers to brother, John Apuke) was the widow of Richard Baldwin and did not remarry after his death.

Will of Elyn Apuke made 24 Nov 1565 & proved 24 Oct 1566; Abstract of her will (by Audrey Hoffman): "To be buried in the church yard of Aston Clinton; to the poor there 12s, & to the poor of Cholsbury 12d; to each of my godchildren 4 pence; to each of my childrens children 4 pence; to each of my daughters Cecilye and Lettys sundry linen, household stuff, &c. when married. they to be guided in their marriage by my cousin George Baldwin; to Richard and Sylvester, children of my son Henry Baldwin, each 12 pence; residue of personalty to my son Henry Baldwin"

Her burial is not listed at the Aston Clinton. She might have gone to live with her son John in Chesham after Richard's death and is buried there.

See Charles C. Baldwin Baldwin Genealogy, page 1.

The above seems to be all that we know about Ellen Baldwin. Namely, she may have been the sister of John Apuke (Pooke) mentioned in her husband's will as "brother". I have not seen reliable sources for her parents. Online trees have either Able Pooke or John Pooke as her father. Able is a male name but some online trees have a John Pooke married to an Able Pooke.

Richard married Ellen A. Puke (Pooke) circa 1528 at England. He and Ellen A. were blessed with 7 children. Richard inherited lands as described in his father's will - certain lands and tenements at Bellenden and other lands and tenements at Dungrove in Botley, free lands at Dungrove, and an acre of land called Sperrowacre. Richard is the youngest son, but by the writing of his will, he is well established at Dundridge. From the will of his father, Robert, it would appear that the rights to Dundridge had gone to the heir of the estate, the eldest son, John. However, from records, John becomes established at the Hale, and the next son Thomas, who dies young, is established in Wendover. At this point we have not found a clue as to the events that lead to Richard's obtaining Dundridge.3 He made his will the 16th of January in the 6th year of Edward VI [1553]
