Richard BALDWIN was born in 1500 in Ashton Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England. He signed a will on 16 Jan 1553. He has a will on record as proved on 21 Feb 1553 in Buckinghamshire, England. He was a Yeoman. He died in Ashton Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England. He was buried in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England. Most often Richard Baldwin is shown as the son of Sir John Baldwin b 11 Aug 1470. I believe this was assumed as since they inherited Sir John Baldwin's land.

RICHARD I BALDWIN, yeoman, "of Dundridge," died in 1553. His will was administrated by his brother John Baldwin. His wife Ellen, probably the sister of John Apuke (Pooke), died in 1585 or 6. This Richard and his brother John were in possession of the Manor of Dundridge but eight years after the death of Sir John Baldwin. But Col. Chester says the fact that Richard and his wife Ellen were not buried in-side the church, but in the churchyard, indicates that he was not the sole lord of the manor, and that he and John were at the time probably joint tenants of the heirs.

Richard's will of Jan 6, 1552/3 names all his children. His farm in Dongrove was to go to son John, but if John died before the age of 23, to go to Henry. "To son Richard my tenth in Cholesburg and rents belonging there to when 23; to Ellynn my wife and HENRY, the rest of said houses and lands towards bringing up my children. To HENRY ten silver spoons and a manor. The residue to Ellyn and HENRY equally, and they to be executors: oversees to be my brothers John Baldwin and John Apuke. He also mentioned his brothers son Hughe.

Ellyn's will, probated 1565-66, bequeathed to the mother church of Lincoln, to the poor if Aston, Clynton and Cholesbury, to cousin (nephew), George Baldwin of Hale, and he to guide daughters Cicilye and Lettys in their marriage, to "other daughters," Richard and Sylvester, "children of my son HENRY BALDWIN," son John to be executor and residuary legalee; overseer HENRY BALDWIN. She signed herself "Elyn Baldwin... of Dinrich in the parish of Aston Clinton, Bucks, widow."

He was married to Ellen APOKE in 1522 in Ashton Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England. Ellen APOKE was born in 1507 in Ashton Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England. She died on 24 Nov 1565 in Ashton Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England. Richard BALDWIN and Ellen APOKE had the following children:

  2. Richard BALDWIN.
  3. John BALDWIN.
  4. Alice (Alis) BALDWIN was born in 1535. She died in 1567.
  5. Agnes BALDWIN.
  6. Lettice BALDWIN.
  7. Cicely BALDWIN was born about 1550. She died in 1599.

note: Richard BALDWIN b. abt. 1503 of Aston Clinton, co. Bucks, England m. abt. 1526 Ellen APUKE. His father is NOT the Sir John BALDWIN that many books mention. "Sir John BALDWIN had no male heirs. His properties were acquired prior to 1506 and were settled upon his wife Ann, who survived him and held it in dower. It was inherited by Thomas PAKINGTON, son of his daughter Agnes and Robert PAKINGTON. Agnes became a widow and her 17 yr. old son rented the Dundridge Manor to a Richard BALDWIN who was probably a rich relative.

This does not seem correct to me.

According to Clifford L. Stott (FASG), author of "Sylvester and Jane

On the death of his father Richard took over the lease of Dundridge Manor. In 1541 the Countess of Salisbury died and the Manor was returned to the monarchy under control of Henry VIII, he did not disturb the tenancy of Richard and Ellen.

Henry VIII gifted or sold the manor to Sir John Baldwin in 1544, he died in 1545 and left the manor in the charge of Sir Robert Pakington who in 1579 passed it over to Henry Baldwin -Richards eldest son. Making Henry not just the tenant of Dundridge Manor but the official Lord of Dundridge Manor.

Richard is the youngest son, but by the writing of his will, he is well established at Dundridge. From the will of his father, Robert, it would appear that the rights to Dundridge had gone to the heir of the estate, the eldest son, John. However, from records, John becomes established at the Hale, and the next son Thomas, who dies young, is established in Wendover. At this point we have not found a clue as to the events that lead to Richard's obtaining Dundridge.3 He made his will the 16th of January in the 6th year of Edward VI [1553].
