Biography

Elnathan Baldwin spent much of his life in colonial New Jersey and wasone signer of the "50 Men's Compact" during the 1733 Coxe Trials. This was an important legal conflict which occurred in the Hopewell Township of New Jersey in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War. The incident exposed the failures of the colonial legal system. The trials revolved around whether the government could require landowners to pay twice for land they had already settled and paid once for because of a deed despute. The result of the bitter legal battle was that many families from Hopewell township lost their farms and later resettled as a group in North Carolina in something that would come to be called the Jersey Settlement. A detailed account was written by Ethel Stroupe in 1996 and includes a description of the trials, family displacement, and tar and feathering of those who would profit from such injustice. Her work is linked in the sources. The Coxe Trails are also discussed where the issue is described simplyas a challenge to the validity of the original deeds, not an expression of a corrupt legal system:"A History of the Old Presbyterian Congregation of the People of Maidenhead and Hopewell". Reverend George Hale. Press of Henry B Ashmead, Philadelphia, 1876. http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofoldpres00hale#page/32/mode/2... This small history also records the marriage of Keziah Prudden, daughter of Reverend John Prudden, to Elnathan Baldwin which is listed on page 33, and mentions some of their many children. Will written in 1738 mentions children Stephen, Ruth, Moses, Thomas, Joseph and Elnathan.
