Johann arrived in South Africa at the age of 17 years. In Grahamstown three years (1861) later he joined the “Frontier Armed and Mounted Police” under the command of Sir Walter Currie. He served in the Rhodesian Matabele Rebellion, the “Native Wars” of 1877-78-79 and was present at the attack on Moroisi’s Mountain on the night of November 20, 1879. He also fought at Booma Pass and his name is inscribed on the monument there. He received his discharge in 1880, being medically unfit, after a service of 18½ years, being a Sergeant Major on his retirement.

Sir Hercules George Robert Robinson appointed Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Pautz Field Cornet of Ward 8, King William’s Town on June 9, 1880(?), a position he held until his death on June 22, 1908 aged 66 years, 8 months and 19 days. He is buried in King William’s Town.

This confirmation certificate is in the Amathole Museum in King William's Town, Eastern Cape, South Africa and I scanned it back in 1999. I wish I could trace his medals!

2019-09-03 Facebook - KWT Cemetery Burial Records show that when he died on 22 June 1908, he was 66y 8m 19d old. DOB is thus 3 October 1841: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10157532265042803&set=p.101...
