Emily Jane Akers was born in 1847 in Kentucky, most likely in Floyd County. She was the daughter of Jonathan Wesley Akers and Sally Howell. She married Benjamin Brewer. After her husband's death, she moved to Cass County, Missouri. Later, after 1900, she moved to Douglas County, Washington. She died on December 13, 1909 in Bridgeport, Douglas County, Washington

She appeared on the census of 1860 at Floyd County, Kentucky, listed as Jane age 11 living in home of father. In the 1870 census at Floyd County, Kentucky, listed as Emily J. Brewer, living with her husband and son John, five months old. In the census of 1880 at Floyd County, Kentucky, she is listed as Emily Brewer, a widow aged 30, with 6 children. In the 1900 census, taken at Cass County, Missouri, she was listed as a widow, age 50, who had seven children, six still living.
