Emily married Peter Lucas in 1839, a widower with three young children, who had great difficulties making a living. It appears that Emily was not supported by her father John Malbon, who by this time had become rich from a large inheritance. Was she excluded because she married Peter Lucas, who was about to go bankrupt (in 1844)? Was Peter Lucas regarded by John Malbon as a 'gold-digger', marrying Emily in the hopes that he would become rich from her inheritance?
In 1881, Emily was living as an annuitant in Congleton with her son Peter. She must eventually have inherited some of the family money, perhaps from a brother or sister.
