Eugene Flowers Harrell was born March 27, 1889 in Carrollton, Carroll County, Mississippi, son of Charles F. Harrell and Isabel (Beeler) Harrell. In 1911, he moved to Texas.
In 1914, he married Maude Fry in Paris, Lamar County, Texas. They became the parents of Calvin Eugene (1922) and Annie Christine Harrell (1926).
He was the first motorcycle policeman in Paris; served as city marshal or police chief from 1919 to 1925; served as a Texas Ranger for 18 months before appointment in 1926 as warden of the Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville for two years; elected flotorial representative to the state legislature for Lamar and Fannin counties during 1937-1941, and served as Lamar County judge during 1941-1945.
At times, he had been in the insurance business here in Paris and operated the old Paris City Bus Lines. He was a former moderator of the old Lamar County Baptist Association, and, later, active in the Rio Grande River Missions of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Also, he was a member of the Lions Club and the Masonic and Knights of Pythias Lodges.
In 1948, his wife, Maude, preceded in death. He moved to Harlingen, Cameron County, TX to become area director with the U.S. Department of Labor until his retirement. He married again to widow Thelma (Roy) Bridges of Hugo, Oklahoma and became stepfather to her son, Dan Bridges, Jr. By 1968, his family included 3 grandchildren.
On Wednesday, January 1, 1969, Eugene F. Harrell, age 79, died in a hospital in Harlingen, TX. Arrangements were with Gene Roden and Sons in Paris, TX where the funeral was held on Saturday, January 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Baptist Church of which he was a former deacon. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Section 25-24-04, Paris, Lamar County, Texas.
