Promoted major-general in 1802, Brownrigg became a lieutenant-general in 1808 and Quartermaster-General in the disastrous Walcheren Expedition of 1809. From 1812 to 1820, he was posted to Ceylon as Governor and Commander-in-Chief. When a king who ruled the interior of the island murdered ten British subjects, Brownrigg declared war against him and by 1815 had conquered and annexed the Kingdom.
